English language tests for private hire drivers 

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that all new applicants, and existing private hire drivers applying to renew their licence for the first time since the introduction of this new requirement, must now meet the equivalent of a B1 English language requirement.

What is in the exam? 

  • ISE: Integrated Skills in English I (B1) SELT
  • Test of 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening
  • Can be taken in 1 day
  • Result and certificates usually received within 15 working days
  • Candidates must pass both modules for an ISE I (B1) qualification.

    2 hours:

  • 2 x Reading tasks
  • 1 x Reading into writing task
  • 1 x Writing task
Speaking & Listening

    18 minutes:

  • 1 x Topic task
  • 1 x Conversation task
  • 2 x Listening tasks

RESULTS AND CERTIFICATES 

When you get your results for ISE 1, you receive:

  • Certificate if you passed both parts if the exam
  • Diagnostic report for each skill showing how you performed in the exam
