English Language Tests For Private Hire Drivers

Transport for London (TFL) has announced that all new applicants, and existing private hire drivers applying to renew their licence for the first time since the introduction of this new requirement, must now meet the equivalent of a B1 English language requirement.


B1 (CEFR) Exam for TFL purposes (Mill Hill)

Reading / Writing / Speaking /Listening at B1 level

*Pre-Test Tips, Technique and Practise are included in the price of the exam.

Candidates can attend a class before the exam which will teach tips and techniques for your exam. Candidates find this very helpful and hopefully you will then achieve a higher grade. Price: £20

Reading & Writing

  • 1 hour 40 minutes:
  • 2 x Writing tasks
  • 3 x Reading into writing task
  • 2 x Writing tasks
Speaking & Listening

  • 34 minutes:
  • 3 x Speaking tasks
  • 3 x Listening tasks

Results and Certificates

We receive results and certificates within 10 working days

(The examining board reserve the right to moderate papers and sometimes results may be delayed).


Upgrading Skills

We advise candidates to use B1 materials to upgrade skills in reading / writing / speaking and listening.
